OK I listed a car for sale on Gumtree and within a few minutes I have this very foreign sounding gentleman calling me, asked a few questions that were already answered in the ad, and asked for my best price. He also repeatedly mentioned he was going to export it. I gave him my best price and he countered with what I probably would have accepted had there not been scam alarm bells ringing in my head. I said no politely and we ended the call. 2 mins later he texts increasing his offer by £100 saying he would come today and collect. Am I being neurotic? does anyone see a scam here?

As said to be 100% safe get them to meet you at your bank with the cash.Pay the cash into your account ,so that it has been checked by the bank clerk, then give them the car.

snowshoe, thanks, no need to shout!
Eddie etc, I didn't get that far, it just seemed fishy straight away, like they have some sort of alert on gumtree postings for potential victims. The call was literally within 2 minutes of posting. I suspect if I'd gone any further it would have been the paypal scam mentioned above. I have a 6th sense and the scam klaxon was going off in my head from the start. May have been legit but I doubt it.

did you read the above? I have not agreed to sell to him, has trouble written all over it.
You can put an 'items wanted' notice on Gumtree. You specify the items you are interested in and they you send a message as soon as an item that matches your 'wanted list' is posted. So the fast response just tells you the person was looking for an item like the one you are selling. It's not suspicious.
Think this poster is a Banker , sure I read somewhere that he works in a bank, and would know all about fake money etc.
You were right to go with your gut whether it is a scam or not. Intuition is your most powerful defence mechanism.
Snow.. you are shouting!
