If You Had A Twin, But Didn't Realise...

I have a 2003 (03 plate) Nissan Primera SE
It's a great car BUT at the last service I (and the garage) got a huge shock. Despite only having 18,000 miles on the clock, the two fron tyres are worn down TO THE METAL BRAIDING on their inside edges. The rest of the tyre has loads of tread left (which is why I didn't spot it)
I have had the tracking and alignment checked and everyone tells me they are fine. I have new tyres on the front (nearly 300 quids worth) but the last I heard from my garage was "keep an eye on them and let us know if you notice any unusual wear" - I'd hoped for something a little more positive.
Has anyone else experienced this?
I still have the tyres (trusting soul that I am!) and I am also going to look for an independent "tyre expert" for an opinion - anyone know where I should look?
Thanks for any info - this is really concerning me - particularly since I am off to Germany in a few weeks and was looking forward to some autobahn driving (but with suspect front tyres, perhaps I'll stick to sedate speeds)
Cheers

My tyres (all 4) have been replaced twice in less than 3 years, and only 32,000 miles total for both sets. I do howeveer have a Subaru, so permanent 4-wheel drive. The tracking and alignment on mine was laser checked and found to be fine.

I've already had the front end checked TWICE (in seperate places, of course).
My breakdown cover is with Norwich Union Direct - I'll see who their experts are and give them a call - thanks for the suggestion KJN
I'll keep you all posted (but it'll take a while - I'm out of the country for a few weeks)
