battery, starter motor or alternator??

I have a 1992 ford fiesta, battery light is constantly on, it kept cutting out, other day it wouldnt start at all so i got a new battery but it still wont start...any ideas? i believe it to be starter motor or alternator

From your description it sounds like the alternator has died, that would explain the warning light, cutting out, and then wont go at all. But now that you have fitted a new battery it should start OK and run but if the alternator is not charging the battery it will become flat again after one or two days.


When you say it won't start what do you mean.
1. When you turn the key nothing happens.
2. When you turn the key there is a loud click but the engine doesn't turn.
3. When you turn the key the engine turns but it will not actually start.

I would be looking at the alternator / belt as has been mentioned.


Also worth checking the security of the thick cabling to the starter motor / solenoid. I've known this to start fracturing on some Fiestas to the point where there are insufficient strands of cable to pass enough current.

I have now fitted a new starter motor, when the car is used it starts ok but when left overnight the engine turns but it will not start, before i only had a click, the battery light is still on, thanks for your replies i will get these checked out
It sounds like the alternator to me.
