I know that the current vehicle registration system allows a rough idea of where a car was registered - A for (East) Anglia, B for Birmingham etc. Some letters are excluded, eg I, Q, Z. I am certain that I saw one the other day prefixed U. Is this possible?

There are some 'private' registrations which start with U.
The alphabetical system is rather quaint: eg G for “garden of England”
!!
there are no U prefixed in the current system, are you sure it wasn't from a previous numbering system? it can't be suffix or prefix, could be northern Ireland or pre 1963.
Belfast plates start UZ

I have seen the car again and it's this reg: UW11KES. Must be a special personal number. I thought these began with letter J. Do you pay even more for a U?
