Mot Postponement?

The other day I saw a short report on TV that there might now be a 'holiday' on MoT tests until this current crisis is over, and that an arrangement would be put in place so you could tax your car online , as it can't be taxed without a current MoT. Can't find any further info, and there's nothing in today's paper. Has anyone heard anything similar?

Not quite ALL vehicles, only those whose MoT is due from 30th March. If your MoT is due before then it needs to be done.

Can't see why they don't do what they have done in NI which is to provide an MOT ext because of safety issues with the lifts at MOT centres (different system for MOTing in NI)
I book my MOT online - they auto send out an letter covering me until the lifts are fixed

I don't understand why the system in Northern Ireland is different - I think I'm right in saying that a car doesn't need its first MoT there until it's 4 years old, not 3 as in the rest of the UK.

I think that's right but I have never owned a car that young so cannot confirm it - but the whole MOT system is different - the MOT is government run in huge centres not individual garages.
Its like a huge conveyor belt - you turn up start your MOT and once you have moved on down the belt the next person starts

bhg - fully agree with your response, but people should be aware that there is/was an insurer that specifically made the validity of the cover conditional on a valid MoT (third party claims aside of course). Some insurers may also try/have tried to reduce the value of an own damage claim in the absence of an MoT.

I am ok then - I was worried too as my MOT is up on 20 April so now it will be exempt.

For a 2011 car I only have 25,000 miles.

Arrods - yes, Naomi pointed that out. The problem is, with that company, if your MoT expires the only way to get your car to an MoT centre legally is on the back of a lorry because it's not allowed on the road. A company to be avoided.

For insurance purposes......we are not left "without" MOT cover. The current MOT has been """extended""" for all vehicles due after March 30th. It may yet be extended for another 6 months if the government deems it necessary. You are legally MOT covered.
