on my range rover clasic the thick brown wire from ignition switch gets very hot any ideas?

It either has a poor connection near the hottest point or it is overloaded. Have you added any accessories without essential relays? I presume you have been working on it to know it gets hot.

I think you'll find that a lot of 'accessories' run off that brown wire. Are all the electric windows working ? The wires to the doors are prime candidates for getting pinched and partially shorting to earth (it happened to me). Also, if you have the later electric seat model - are the seats moving properly ? Both are typical British Leyland problems - combine poor design of the way the wires are routed with insufficient testing.
