I have had the car in for its MOT and the repair cost is prohibitive. Unfortunately I taxed it earlier this month! Can I get a refund on the tax and if so how do I go about it? Thanks folks.

You can get a refund on any full months remaining. If you go on dvla site it will tell you. I think it can be done at post offices that issue road tax. I think there is a form to fill in either download or get from post office.
You would have to declare that the vehicle is off the road. (SORN) declaration.
You will be refunded only for complete months so you'll get eleven months' worth.
when you have stopped driving it, get it off the road and declare a sorn here: https://www.gov.uk/make-a-sorn
then any complete months VED you have paid will be refunded.
It could be worse. My car ended up in a similar situation immediately after I'd filled the petrol tank to the brim. Then, when I drove the car to a scrap yard, I forgot to remove twenty-odd quid's worth of loose change from inside it!

Thanks a lot folks. Seems simple and straightforward enough - even for me - the most simple of things!
