aelmpvw, yes that is a shortcoming. I think that a much better charging infrastructure is needed before we can go over to electric vehicles wholesale. They are great round town and going a few dozen miles to work and back. There will also be the problem of charging millions of cars, many new power stations will need to be built, mostly nuclear. Then there is the...

Tora, you’re right! Silly me. Glad you remember what I’m talking about tho!
Incidentally, Mrs Z was spending around £20-25 a week on petrol. The charging is costing us around £25 a month (including standing charges etc on an electric tariff) on a night time rate.
based on a ford Zephyr chassis with a cortina engine.

It was apparently bought by DLT after the series finished. I love UFO, it's repeated on Forces TV occasionally. The titles were incredible, was mesmerised by the shiny short skirts!
one of the best title sequences in History:

Thanks Tora. Always something for the dads ;-)
My parents live in Portsmouth which is a city filled with terraced streets. The council there are beginning to install chargers in lampposts
26 episodes, Ed Bishop, George Sewell, Michael Billington, Wanda Ventham (Cumberbatch's mum!), Peter Gordino, Gabrielly Drake. I had all the toys! Did you know Ed Bishop was in 2 Bond films?
Gabrielle !
I didn’t know that about Ed Bishop or Cumberbatch’s mum. Looks like I’ve woken a sleeping giant on the series! I had the SHADO2 Mobile (tracked thing with flip over missile launcher on the top) and the SHADO Interceptor (in green).
That's why it's unrealistic, if you haven't got private off road parking then buying an electric car is a complete waste of time, I'll stick with my 4x4 diesel thanks.
Electric car batteries are only in their early days yet .. There is a great deal more to do, including solutions for those whoonly have on street parking.
Remember this word .. Graphene.

Some remarkabe work being done right enough.
alava. //Electric car batteries are only in their early days yet .. There is a great deal more to do,//

There sure is, including sourcing the rare earth minerals that they are made with, most of the land deposits which are known are in the hands of the Chinese who are buying up land in Afghanistan, Africa & anywhere else where it exists.
Batteries are not recyclable btw & inevitably the returned Chinese versions end up in landfill sites.
Personal transport has no long-term future imo.

Nah.
A record number of electric cars are on the road, and 2020 was the first year that renewable energy overtook fossil fuel energy generation all year round.
sunk, they currently struggle with the ad break in corrie! When every man and his dog is charging a jam jar a few windmills ain't gonna cut it.
Tora

You are Twenty years out of date. Poor fellow.
what? wind/wave/hydro/solar - renewables? right?
Tora,

Gas and coal generation were turned off for half of the year. Wind, solar and Nuclear coped without the coal and gas fossil fuels, in 2020. Renewables overtaking fossil fuels over the year for the first time.

Twenty years ago, 20 million people turning their kitchen light on during the ad break during Corrie was enough to put pressure on supply.
Now we have low energy lighting, all domestic boilers have been replaced with energy efficient ones, grants for insulation, smart meters and household appliance are now low energy. Consumption has gone down.
https://www.carbonbrief.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/uk-primary-energy-use.png

But that is beside the point. Cars, phones, laptop and other devices are all recharged during the night when consumption is low and availability is high.

Scaremongering about having to build more nuclear power stations is not true. Rubbish put about by Jeremy Clarkeson petrolhead fans.
"Gas and coal generation were turned off for half of the year. " - I didn't mention fossil fuels but I remember a fanfare last year when we went a week without using coal:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/48190269
So I think I'd have heard about it if they were turned off for 6 months.
yes I agree that much of the new power usage will be at night but there will also be lot more in the day than now, If we can't get fusion viable then we'll struggle without new nuclear power stations lest we have to fall back on fossil fuels.
What about the maintenance and repairs to electric cars? Will the mechanics have to be retrained?
