I have just put in another 1.8 16Valve engine into my 406, but it is overfuelling. (Can smell petrol from the exhaust, lumpy idle with cable adjusted quite a long way to get it to idle.) Are there any sensors that would give this problem if they were not working on the replacment engine? or does it just need tuning?

possibly faulty Lambda sensor/oxygen sensor... bit pricey to replace on a hunch though.

check + perhaps replace spark plugs, if there is not a decent spark, the fuel wont burn properly.

perhaps find an independent garage that will test emmisions for you without charging an arm and a leg?

Call in one of those mobile tuning guys, they will be in the phone book. They have all the gear including exhaust analysers - should be less than 50 (not incl any parts) Will be worth it to get your replacement engine running sweetly.
