I've just been listening to an interesting conversation on the Jeremy Vine show. Since electric cars are exempt from road tax and don’t need petrol, their drivers pay nothing whatsoever towards the upkeep of our roads. If that situation remains how are the roads going to be maintained when we're all driving electric cars?

I called it road tax because, like some of the people on the programme, I thought it went towards road maintenance. I don’t know if anyone corrected them. I didn’t listen to it all. What do I know anyway? I just pay it when it’s due!
Apparently they are thinking about toll roads.
I think that taxation/charges will be filtered back in via classification of vehicles and uses as revenue drops from non-electric vehicles. Likely first to be hit will be commercial vehicles and 'luxury' cars.

Why does vehicle use have to be heavily taxed?
Same as anything really, someone's got some money to spend on something and the government want a bit of it.
