It may not be a valve or exhaust at fault but the valve or exhast SENSOR which is faulty, this will put the engine management unit into 'safe' or 'get you home' mode which will cause a loss of power and the engine management light to come on.
Only way to find out is to replace the sensor.
I had a 98 Vectra in which the crank speed sensor and cam sensor went within 3 months of each other, nothing wrong with the crank or cam but a total �500 bill to replace the faulty sensors!
