Motorbike Handlebar Steering Limiter

Hey folks, I have bought a motorbike that has been lightly crashed. The steel peg that limits the steering is bent so the left handlebar grip hits the petrol tank!
Is it sensible to whack the steering hard in the opposite direction to straighten the limit peg or is there a more sane solution?
