I've just called Saga to see if they can improve on my renewal quote, which they couldn't and just encouraged me to shop around. The operator was very apologetic and seemed resigned to cancelling policies and explaining how to move elsewhere. Quite surprised really. Anyway....

I've checked All the comparison websites I can think of plus Aviva and Direct Line. The most competitive prices are with companies I've never heard of so a bit weary. Anyone any other tips before I make a decision?

Is there much of a difference between companies you are familiar with and not?

I would rather pay a bit more for the peace of mind

Tesco was the cheapest for me this year, have you checked them?

I would be wary of an unknown name too

Put all your details with confused.com, they show you loads of quotes where you can, say, change your excess on a policy or have a recovery/breakdown thrown in (be careful as some have distance away from home restrictions). On top of that if you take out a policy with confused.com you can choose a car wash every month (at IMO carwash stations) or £20 halfords voucher or £20 Shell fuel, obviously if there's a Shell station near you.

Everyone's car insurance is jumping up this year. Probably best to bit the bullet and stay with Saga.

I never go for the cheapest quote...I want good cover at a fair price. I only ever insure with a Which? Recommended provider.

Currently they are LV, NFU Mutual, Aviva, Direct Line and Churchill.

Each of the last two years, my premium has reduced by a total of nearly 20% - that's without asking! With LV.

Same as me ginge.  I was amazed that there was nobody cheaper anyway.

try NFU - they can be very competirive or close too - excellent service. They dont feature on compare sites.

Thanks all. I've tried all the comparison websites and have quotes of £100 less than Saga with the AA for example. But before I go with it I might try Tesco and LV and Churchill specifically.

hi maydup, i said this on the other thread but i got mine through topcashback.co.uk, ad got it for £198 fully comp with aviva with £42 cashback.

People get put off of TCB but i just had a look and i have geniuinely ot over £500 in cashback in 3 years.  The offre i posted about before with the extra £20 is not on any more but if you use my code referral

https://www.topcashback.co.uk/ref/bednobs

to join, i get a bonus :) and you still get your cashback if you go thru their comparison site

Been with Churchill for many years but this year they almost doubled the quote and would only come down by a bit so we went with LV and it was £100 cheaper.

And NFU, thanks.

I've signed up bednobs and might go that route. The quotes are the same as the comparison sites but the extra £40 off will help if I can't do any better elsewhere. Thank you

if you do do it, make sure you go thru them, or it wont track.  you wont get the 42 straight away either - it takes a month or so

Question Author

All done! After a long boring session of giving every possible insurance company all my details I settled for Churchill bought via the cash back site (thanks Bednobs).
The premium was £80 less than SAGA plus £40 cash back is payable in time.

For info NFU expect you to phone them, LV, AA, Aviva, Axa, GA, Hastings and all comparison sites were similar prices but a tad more than Churchill.

My tip is to increase your excess to the max and save on the premium based on the fact that you're probably only going to claim if it's a right off anyway. Fingers crossed.

Bednobs - Sadly it appears that Go Compare Car Ins is in the long list of exclusions for refer a friend referral on the cash back site. 🙁

Glad you are sorted, Maydup.

I had a massive increase in house insurance from Direct Line as well this year - Tesco was best for me again.

Dont do Direct line

currently I am thought to have stolen my own car dumped it and walked back home 4 mi

Hold it, arent I the one back at the local cancer hospital? Yes.

Oh that was option 1 - option 2 was someone else stole it and joy rided it and wrecked it. This is thought to be unlikely

DL was brilliant when we were in a fatal accident over 20 years ago
