I have a rover 45 1.4is x reg, The red srs light has recently illuminated on the front dashboard and does not go off, This is to warn me that there may be a problem with my airbags, has anyone any ideas as to what quick checks i can do to resolve the problem so that i can try and fix it myself without taking it to an auto technician

Many lights will not reset without diagnostic machines so you might have to visit a technician.
To give it a go though the typical problems are loose/broken connections to the seatbelt tensioners. Lots of times the wires run from under the seats to under the carpet and can get caught/kicked/broken by seat movement or rear passemger feet. Look under the seats for broken wires/loose mulitplugs.

You can also suffer from loose connections on other parts of the system, my toyota had a loose connection on the actual crash sensor, just pushed it back in place and it worked no problem.
* Warning * playing around with the srs system can be risky, you might cause a deployment of the air bags. You can disconnect the car battery (check out the radio codes problem first !) but be aware that many srs systems have an independant power supply which keeps power for some minutes after the battery power goes off.

I don't know where you are located, but Viking in Birmingham are a very good non-franchise (if there are any left now) Rover specialist. They are the cheapest I have come across and do Engine Management programming etc. They are on 0121-459-6866. Hope ythis helps.
I had the same problem on my Rover 45 ixs,u need to solder the wires direct (cut off plug under drivers seat),so you actually disgard the plastic plug, and join the wires seperately .The service manager at my local main dealer told me what they did ,it is a common problem apparently.hope this helps you !
Hi, the problem with these is there is an air bag connector under the passenger seat it s yellow clip, this needs to be making contact for the airbag light to switch off.

Solution 4 scotch locks and 2 different coloured wires (bypass the connector).

When you turn the car off take the key out, leave it for 1 minute then start the car, the system will do a diagnostic test and if connection is made it will turn the light off.

There's also one under the drivers seat, you may do that as well.
