1993 rover 1.4:

you must see if there are no leaks or punctures in the pipes which lead from the thermostat to the engine gauge... it is a fairly simple process to fix. but my advice is to take it to a pro!

but i strongly suggest u dont drive the car, and if gods on your side the gauge must be faulty!

Don't want to dishearten you, but head gasket failure is quite common on these cars.

Head gasket is a possibility. It may be something more simple however. My Rover Mini had a similar problem (mini and metro engines basically the same). I got pressure build up in the system and over heating. I changed the thermostat, checked the hoses and ruled out head gasket. In the end it turned out to be a faulty water pump. Coolant was not being pumped around the sysyem correctly resulting in hotspots. It's not a hard job and fairly cheap. Probably worth a look. Whilst doing that check all the hoses and flush the system. Have you got oil in the coolant (or coolant in the oil)? This is a sign of head gasket.
