why has my reverse gear stopped working

ford mondeo automatic P reg, the reverse gear has stopped working. The gears were being jumpy then were ok then the reverse went completely. Please help

Hi the milage is 45000 miles, I have looked at the oil seems fine and the wiggily oil dip stick at the back and that has oil on to or something. The oil does not smell burnt. This thing will just not work. If the gear box is on its way out how much do you think it will cost and is it worth doing as the car is a nice one but only cost me �600.

yes all gears work fine and the reverse gear seems to be going into gear it just has no pull. The oil and everything is fine and all top up. The garage said its the mecanical side of things and would need a new gear box quoted �1000 + vat for a recon. All foward gears are working.
