Weird signs

A few years ago a number of geometric shapes - (diamonds, squares etc) began to appear on many roadsigns on major routes here in the South.

I believe that the idea behind them was to assist motorists in following diversions when they occurred.

Has anybody ever been instructed or advised to use them?

Were they displayed nationwide?

How much of our road tax revenue was spent on this initiative?

Symbols showing emergency diversion routes for motorway and other main road traffic (pic) have been used nationally for many years, predominantly in the case of major roadworks but also for traffic management of festivals/events etc.

...forgot to add that although I do not know how much road tax revenue has been spent on this, we should be thankful that any of the revenue has found its way back to benefit the roads and motorists, since less than a fifth of revenue raised from VED, Fuel Duty and VAT is returned to Roads & Public Transport.
