Diesel engine won't switch off

Hello, Motorists.

My flat mate's Renault 14 diesel won't stop running when the key is out. The only way to stop it is to stall it in gear with the brakes on, but this can't go on. What do reckon it is?

Almost certainly your ignition barrel...a bit of a favourite on the older renaults. Get a locksmith to look at it rather than a renault dealer, it'll save you a packet!

Could also be the shut-off on the injector pump. I seem to recall on my diesel (some time ago) that there was an electric shut-off valve which cut the fuel when the ignition was switched off.

Otherwise, basically the thing would run and run. It was also a good way of immobilising it - removing the connection.

I would say it's the shut-off valve as well.

if all the lights stay on and all the other electrics them it's the key/ignition.

if everythings off and still runs it's the fuel cut off valve on the injection pump. not a big job but you have to know what your doing.

use first gear to stall it and make sure its in neutral when not running, safety issue.

sounds like the cut off valve. (fuel solenoid switch)

this switch cuts the fuel supply.

without the aid of this switch, the engine wouldnt curn off at all !

sounds like the stop solenoid on the injection pump.has a single wire going to it.the plunger inside jams so you have to replace it.about �40 .
