Or you could ask if they have any jewellers rouge, a red fine abrasive powder to polish the scratches out with. You use it as a paste (mix with a little water) and is very hard work but it does remove scratches. It may be that the scratches you have are beyond repair this way tho'. Good luck!
ps, if your screen gets broken (if u know what I mean) insurance normally covers it but there will almost certainly be an excess of �100 or so towards a replacement! check your insurance details.
Take a look at the link (if it works). The windscreen scratch repair kit is fantastic. I had exactly the same problem as you and after 20 mins and a little work the scratches were gone. I really would recommend it and for �20 it's worth a go. Like I say mine worked perfectly.
