My daughter is just getting her first car, a s/h Vauxhall Corsa.

I want to buy her a security device to fit to the sterring wheel or gear stick / hand brake.

Had a look in Halfords this morning but couldnt decide on the best one to buy.

Anyone got some suggestions for a good one to buy (or perhaps NOT to buy)

Disclocks are the best for security but they are a tad expensive. It would be best if you could try a few at the shop actually on the car. There needs to be as little movement in the locks as possible. Any movement allows leverage by wouldbe thieves.

All steering wheel type locks can be removed in seconds by an experienced joy rider.

What year is the car?

If it has the older ignition system ie distributor and coil it is easy to immobalise.

disconnect the + feed wire to the coil and extend it into the interior of the car to a hidden switch then lead another wire from the switch back to the coil. the car cannot be started without knowing where the switch is!

Total cost 2.50 and half an hour to fit.

A little more expensive but by far the most effective is the removable steering wheel boss. It costs about 100 but thieves will very very rarely pinch a car without a steering wheel. Its not yet insurance approved but it will do the job. Just ask at your local Halfords.
The best of those devices is the 'disklock'. In tests it takes a theif a whole 18 seconds to remove one. The best bet is to immobilise the car by removing something vital. If you don't want to run to the cost of a remvable steering wheel, then do what people had to do by law during the second world war to immobilise vehicles. Simply show yor daughter how to remove and replace either the rotor arm in the distributor or the main ignition HT lead. With either of these removed the only way the car is going anywhere is via a tow truck !
