I took the speedo cable from an "N" reg mondeo, mine is an "L" reg and when I went to fit it the gearbox end of the cable was fine but the speedometer end was different, I went down to the local ford dealer and enquired about the difference and was informed that yes the cable had been changed (he showed me on the ford parts programme they use on the computer) but if you take a plastic attachement from the back of the speedometer spindle the speedo cable would fit. Thats lovely but I can't seem to get to the back of it going through the gap for the cable, does the dashboard have to come out which is bloody messy or is there an alternative.

Sorry about the length of the question it's like an essay, Cheers astondog

it does sound like it's a dash out job. only early mondeo's had a mechanical speedo, that was what i thought the problem was. i reccomend this forum a lot, but it really is a good place to check www.fordmondeo.org and no, i am not on commission....

Are you sure the cable has not got a join inside the engine compartment and the cable therefore, comes in 2 parts ? My Mondeo (L plate) had a join so there was section from the gearbox to a sort of socket, then a second piece to the rear of the dash.

Luckily it was the gearbox piece that had failed.

from my experience of working on mondeos, u can get the cable on the speedo head by pulling the instrument panel out just enough to get ur hand behind, its fiddley and does ur head in in but u can do it, also take the rubber bung out of the bulkheald to give u more slack on the cable whilst trying to get it on, then connect to the gearbox

Cheers for the info everyone. Yes billy it is a split cable but just my luck its the speedometer end that's gone.

Oh well heres to easing the dash out and plenty of nicks to the hand, hope I don't bleed to death as the hospital put me on warfarin not long ago, is an "L" reg worth bleeding over, yes it's just passed it's mot again. astondog
