Fan belt as has been mentioned.
Check the connections to the rear of the alternator for security. Check that none of the cables are worn, rubbed or fractured. There should be an earth strap, a heavy duty positive lead and a small wire. The small wire senses the voltage and trips the battery light on/off. If this is connecting to earth where it may have worn this could be the problem.
It is possible to check the alternator to a limited extent if you have a voltmeter ;
You should have between 13.5 - 14.5V across the battery with the engine running.
Switch on some load - headlights, heated window and increase engine speed to around 1500-200rpm. Voltage should be about 14V if the alternator is OK.
If it's below 12V or above 14.8V during any of the above you have a faulty alternator.
My girlfriend had the same problem, i didnt discover the follwing cause until i changed the alternator and it stilkl happened ! :
The cable from the alternator was flexing with the movement of the engine, it looked perfectly ok from the outside but was torn inside and eventually broke. Hold the wires between finger and thumb to make sure they are full thickness inside.
