It depense on how the car sorry BMW is driven. Driven hard with lots of cornering and or sudden braking or loaden will lower the milege on the tyres. Better tyres will give better milege because of the good quality rubber.
Should last no lower 12000 miles.
So replacing the front ones after 20k wasn't overly bad?

20k miles out of a set of tyres on an X5 is very reasonable.
Mine needed them at similar miles.
