Car Insurance - Which is cheaper??

Is it cheaper to insure a car on a provisional license or as a passed driver?

Well that's what I thought, but I had someone from a car insurance company phone me today and say that it's cheaper to insure a car on a provisional license because you drive it less than when you have passed.

Ps. There was no need to be sarcastic - I'm not thick, I was just checking.

Some insurance companies are cheaper for young drivers who have not passed as they must be accompanied by an experienced driver - once they have passed then they are literally on their own.

you can be cheaper as a provisional partly because you have an experience driver with you but when you have passed your test (I presume you are a provisional licence holder) ask your driving instructor for plus pass it takes your insurance premium down

I think he's doing quite well without one! The cheapest way to insure is be a named driver on someone elses insurance (for the same car) preferably with a no claims bonus and for them to re-insure the original.

My son was a named driver (provisional licence) on my policy at a very reasonable rate. The day he passed his test I informed my insurers "More Than" who then refused to cover him at all.

After many quotes he finally settled on insurance in his own name with Asda.

It was a shock to find it more expensive to insure him once he had passed his test.

Looks like Norman got it well wrong. Go to confused.com - great site and it finds out quotes live for you. Shows ones that won't insure you (and for what reason) too - great because you may be able to change your circumstances to suit certain companies.

The good thing is that you only have to put your info in once.
Another one is Norwichunion Direct - they have some special online deals and you can get great reductions for certain cars.
