new clutch
...sorry that was supposed to be new cutch more than likely.
More likely needs adjusting or the thrust bearing is failing. Clutches slip if worn.
transits suffered from a ' sticky clutch ' if this applies to an escort also then it's 'new clutch'. if it's hard to engage a gear from standstill (but ok whan moving ) then this is likely. first gear is really hard to engage when this happens.

Hi

Depends which gears are crunching. The clutch operates the same in all gears. If for instance it is 3rd and 4th gear crunching then it will not be the clutch it is more likely to be a gearbox fault. If it is 1st and reverse crunching then it may be the clutch or cable problem. Try operating the release arm with a lever bar instead of the clutch pedal. If the gears are ok then it will be cable/pedal adjuster fault if gears still crunch then it will be release arm/clutch fault.
