I have recently privately purchased a 2001 Suzuki GSX 1400 which has been standing for the last 2 years and has only done 3K miles, basically it is like new. However the bike has developed a problem with the instrument panel in that both the rev counter and speedo operate erratically and the fuel injection light flashes on and off

Most recently the instrument panel now doesnt fuction at all apart from the fuel injection light flashing faintly every 2 seconds whether the ignition is on or not.

Can any one help!

sounds like you got a short....

do a mini strip down on the instrument panel and make sure its dry inside. also follow any of the wiring back in the loom and check all plug connectors for fit or corrosion..

Sounds like a poor earth.
same thing happens on gt550 kawas . as phil says check earthing. just run a temporary earth wire from the inst assy to the battry negative and see if this cures it.
