I'm looking at getting a rover 75 about 6 to 12 months old, Has anyone got any knowledge as to if this would be a good purchase.

Also would like any views on other makes/models which would be a good buy, would prefer a big car as they call it, but no people carriers or 4-wheel drives, I,ve a budget of 10,000 - 12.000

Thanks

The 75 was a fine car by Rover standards, very relaxing to drive too if thats your thing. On the down side its a bit of a barge, and handles like one on more demanding roads. The 1.8 petrol was rather underpowered for a big car, but the V6 and the diesel are ok, best with a manual box. I believe the 2.0l V6 was the best compromise of price and power.
As alternatives, what about an Alfa 156, or a Saab 9-3? My personal choice would be a Peugeot 406, they depreciate like an anvil pushed off a cliff from new, so second hand bargains are there to be had. They are very well equipped, and are a lovely relaxing, acurate drive too. Better drive than the Rover by a long way, great on motorways and fun cross country too. The 2.2L ,136BHP HDI turbo-diesel engine is a belter, and it does 40 MPG!

I agree with Impret-Sir although i would steer well clear of the alfa romeo unless you want to be on first name terms with your local dealer. They can be very unreliable.

Hondas and Toyota are very reliable so maybe look at the Avensis or Accord.

Big B, the unreliable Afla tag does not apply to the 156, after the very early ones, that had a few gremilins, they were much better built than Alfas of old, and are actually as reliable as any other mainstream modern saloon. The 147 is even better.
i really wouldnt get one if i were you, there is up to a 3 month waiting list for parts, so if something major goes or if you are in an accident you had better get a buss pass. they arent worth anywhere near as much as they should be. they aint too bad themselves as a car, shame about how reliable rovers actually are. i know 2 people with them that wish they colud turn back the clock and get something else. in my eyes with that sort of money and for a bigger car i'd get a mondeo, fords are really good cars nowadays, they are safe, reliable, very nice to drive and bits are so easy to get for them

I've recently bought a 75 from Motorpoint and I've been more than happy with its performance.I've always had Mercs etc but wanted a workhorse for travelling the country.I bought the diesel and am getting 41 mpg.I loaded it with trafficmaster sat nav and hands free kit + DVD for the kids.Whole package came to 12000.That's a hell of a lot of car for the money.

Luckily,I haven't had any parts problems yet.

Hope this helps
