getting a knocking coming from under the front of the car happens on different occasions, cant see anything loose. think it first happened when i pulled off the lights and changed gear, but dosent happen everytime i change gear sometimes around corners and sometime over bumps, any ideas

Sounds like this could be an engine mounting block which has failed, they are rubber blocks which support the engine/gbox and they are usually designed so that when they fail they don't collapse or anything but just come loose.
They are rubber blocks bonded to the metal attachment plates and sometimes the rubber comes unstuck from the metal plates.
You can often check this out by putting a car jack under the engine and trying to lift it, a loose mounting will seperate from its support and often can be easy to spot.
