My 1997 Escort 1.8 TDI, is a very poor cold starter. It has had a new head gasket fitted (before I bought it). It uses no oil, as I have had it changed and have done a few 000 miles since. Once started it idles and runs fine. (New air filter and fuel filter also fitted).

The immobiliser light flashes for about a minute, then it flashes 3 times then a gap, then once, then a gap, then 3 again, then gap and the once and so on for about 30 seconds.

Are the 2 issues related? Would the starting be affected if the belt timing was a bit out?

The glow plugs look new. I have taken them all out, and the electrodes are like new. The injector with the wire attached (pulse sensor) is on the 4th cylinday when the Haynes Manual states it should be on the third.

Cant think of any other factors.

Any help would be appreciated.
