ECU fault code on 51 reg Astra 2.0 DTi (20DTH engine?)

I have taken the car for a diagnostic and got back the code 0400 Critical System malfunction 2 (Refer to checking procedure: Trouble code description), present. What does this mean?

The car starts & runs fine - plenty of power and MPG. Its only when the thing is warm and the stops at lights etc. The idle speed drops down and ECU light comes on, car goes into safe mode until gentle revs to third gear - at 2k revs the light will go out and injection returns - any assistance appreciated?, ta paul
