Can anyone give me advice on a Renault Scenic cam belt change. It's a 1.9 turbo diesel. Got the right engine mount off and the engine on a jack and I've undone the belt cover but there's no room to get the cover out. Tried levering the engine away from the bulkhead with a gurt bar but still can't get the covers out. Car's now on stands and I can't use it. Anyone out there done a belt change? Any advice gratefully received. Thanks.

Dave.

Just checked the Renault forum, looks like you have already been there, should get an anser soon there though.
the joys of doin such a complex job on the street. i would never recommend to do a timing belt esp on a scenic by yourself unless u are used to them my advice for you is to rebuild it and take it to a garage who should charge approx 125 in labour!!! let us deal with the problems lol its easier for me to tell u to do this than tell u how to do it coz they are a pain in the a**e to do in a garage never mind on the street if u still intend to do it tho i would recommend that u have lockin tools for the flywheel and cams!!!!! goodluck

Thanks chaps. Thebohy, I was quoted 400 by the garages to do the belt so I'm having a crack at it myself. I'm now into the belt. Although I'd removed the right hand engine mount bracket, as per Haynes, I hadn't taken away the rubber block underneath it. That made all the difference and the cover came straight out. A 5mm straight punch seems to double as a crankshaft holding pin.
i use a screwdriver and a cable tie to hold the flywheel! 400 is too steep was that labour only with u supplying parts?

400 was for the whole job. That's 100 for the belt and idlers and 300 to do it, both Renault dealers and other garages. Done the job now OK thanks, although the large idler had to stay in as the 6mm capheads holding it in were in too tight and the centres turned out. Didn't want to try turning with a chisel in case the head went off then I would be really stuffed. Too tight for an impact driver. Thanks for your comments.
