When you point your car keys to open or shut the doors what are you actually pointing at ? (Vauxhall Vectra). Where is the receiver ?

I have changed my key batteries (both) and gone through the key re-programming routine in the handbook. All works ok locking and unlocking. When I am outside the car it may lock or unlock but never reliably. The car is too old to bother spending money on this but I would like to know if the receiver is OK.

On early Vectras (98-00) I was taught to turn the ignition on and press both buttons on the remote while holding it down by the pedals near the floor.
On the later cars when the remote is built into the key and is not separate it should work from anywhere near the car.
