Looks like the head gasket has gone on my Mondeo, if I just run it a couple of miles a day what will happen, will the sump just fill up with water and will it overheat.

Is it a job that can be done by myself or should I scrap it as it's an "L" reg.

If you can fix it yourself then it's just the cost of a new gasket, otherwise the cost would be much more than the value. If you keep running it the oil and water will mix more and more and knacker the whole engine.
you should also resurface the head as it has possibly warped slightly. if it has, after all your work the new gasket will let go again in short order. highly recommended.

If your an experienced mechanic DIY it.

Garages would charge 300-600.

Might be worth trying an additive - I used one of them years ago for a head gasket problem and it worked. Ask in a reputable autoshop - worth a shot in an older car where you don't want to spend a lot of time or money.
