there was someone in orpington, kent who in the 60/70's, built a rollsroyce, with a spitfire engine i think, the first time he drove it he touched the throttle and it crashed into a railway bridge, i think he was timed doing qver 200mph on a public road by the police
not sure 100% about the accuracy of the details, me dad told me about it years ago, but i have read about it somewhere

I know the Bugatti is a quick car, but on a tight budget, I have a mate who has a Mk2 Fiat Uno Turbo ie, which believe it or not does 165mph. Its slightly modified but not bad for a 1.4i turbo engine. He also has a Mk1 Uno Turbo ie, which is standard and 19 years old, and that does 140mph. I know they aint supercars or anything, but they are low on insurance and cheap to tax and run. Gary-ET
Curlyfilm,
The car with the spitfire merlin engine was known as "The Beast". It had a Rolls Royce radiator; RR took exception to this and insisted that the radiator was handed back to RR.
I heard a radio report a few years ago, the commentator read out the speed from 0 - 100mph in a few seconds, along with roaring of engine. Not impressive, until he said they were in reverse.
The germans brought in a speed limit on autobahns during the fuel crisis of the 70s. The driver of the Beast did not know this and was hammering west. The Germans thought that it was a low flying aircraft and he was in Belgium before they realised that it was a car.
