is there any way of finding out a radio code for a ford escort without getting it de-coded

You will find many friends on here who will be happy to give you the code. Post your serial No.

serial number on the side, probably begins with M and 6 digits.- post it here and no doubt someone can help.
You will have to remove the radio, if you dont have them you can get a set of U-shaped keys (couple of pound at any motor spares shop) to prise it out.
