cables on the roads,,,,

does anybody know what the double lines of cables are on the road. i have noticed quite a lot recently. are they to do with speed cameras??

they record the volume of traffic that uses that particular road or street, that data is the uploaded to a computer at a local coucil or county council.

I always thought that they measured volume of traffic and speed of traffic.

As Bazza says, they are counting axles, as this is how road surfaces are designed. They are designed for, say, 5000 axles per day. Counting the axles is usually a precursor to roadworks, so be ready for delays in the next few months!!
