engine cuts off when i slow down

i have a golf 1.4 1999, which has recently developed a problem of cutting/switching off when i slow down or when i change down the gears. what could be the cause of this ?

I used to have an Astra that did the same. The revs would drop dramatically causing the engine to cut out occasionally when slowing/de-clutching. Turned out to be the Lambda switch / O2 sensor which needed replacing.

Additional to the previous post, it may be worth getting a diagnostic run on the car. Most mechanics will do this for about �30 and it should tell you which (if any) of the sensors are at fault. Maybe a wise investment as a new lambda sensor will set you back a few notes. Have you serviced it recently? Might be worth changing the air filter and checking the breather hoses for leaks. Could be something simple.
