I havnt had car tax for a year on my camper for over a year and I only just had it clamped!

(I thought it was taxed exempt over 25 years)

Anyway you have up to the 14th September to renew your tax. Leave it until the 15th though and you are liable for an 80 pound fine.

Hope this helps
there is no 14 day grace now,if you dont renew it within a couple of days you will get a fine.it will be just your luck if you use it tommorow, that you will get stopped by the police

Thanks. Not fair! thanks anyway x
if you have the renewal documents on you and you get stopped on the way to the PO then just show them to the police and you`ll be fine.
The DVLA computer will already know your car is not taxed and will already be preparing to send you a penalty notice, it does not need the police to see your vehicle!
The 14 days works the other way in that you can apply for a new tax disc in the two weeks leading up to the end of the month.

lbrown24 - The cut off date for historic vehicle exemption is 1st January 1973 - anything registered after that is liable. Qualifying vehicles still carry a tax disc at zero rate to signify that they're taxed and MOTed.
I believe you can now tax your car on line. I have never done it myself, but I am assured that it can be done, and is relatively easy to do.
Hi
I very rarely remember to do mine in time and quite often am about a week late in getting it renewed. To date I have never been fine or had a warning letter or anything.

If you get to your one of the post offices which offer this service, you can get it taxed up to two weeks late (they told me this is how long they hold the tax discs) and you shouldnt have any problem.
We tax on line now and it is so easy.
Just done mine online Horselady, received the disc 3 days later, as you say no problems!
get your life organised. I bet you never pay your bills on time either
As Norman points out there is no such thing as 14 days grace. but, if you are a few days late then that should not be a problem as the fines are not sent out immediately.

However, remember that a parking wrden or the police can issue a fixed penalty if they spot your car without an up to date tax disc.
