i have been driving for a year but have owned and insured a car for 3 years. does this mean i have 3 years no claims or just the 1? im getting quotes for renewing car insurance and some let me put 3 years down and others say i can't as have only been driving a year.

Unless the forms require you to use another definition, you have 3 years NCB. You've had insurance for 3 years, and not claimed against it.
You usually also get asked about how long you've had a licence, so the company should be aware that you only have 1 year's driving experience.
