My dad has always said that motrway "service areas" get funding from the government to keep esential facilities such as toilets open 24hrs. I am most sceptical of this especially when he says it even extends to small petrol stations etc.

Is he right or is this a myth?!

Not in the UK they don't...

the people who run the services have to 'lease' the service site from mr. govt. one of the clauses of said lease is that they have to provide 24/7 toilets, food and drinks and somewhere to sit. if there were no places to stop how many crashes would there be 'cos of tired drivers?
tell dad, ' you're wrong, pops!'
To be honest, considering the costs of running a motorway services, any money from the government would be tiny.

Then again, considering the amounts of money we used to take through the till every day, it would be even more insignificant. For example in one shift I took over 100,000 so a few quid from the government ain't going to do much, even if that wasn't quite the norm.
