Can the insurance companies find out about points on your licence if you don't tell them? Are they able to contact the dvla directly?

I doubt if they could get details directly from DVLA but they can ask to see a copy of your licence. No point in not disclosing points as your insurance can be voided by failure to disclose these. In the event of an accident such a situation could cost you dearly.
The computer data bases of major insurers are linked directly to the DVLA computer system now, this is how the police can do an instant check to see if a driver has insurance, Its also how you are now able to get road tax on line, the dvla can see if you have insurance and MOT from your reg plate.
Not sure if it works the other way as this mean contravene the data protection act, however not telling them about your points is almost as bad as having no insurance at all, as your insurance would probably be Invalid in the event of you making a claim.
Your insurance company arent allowed by law. Its only the police that have authority to check on a vehicle for road tax purposses and insurance checks. So your pretty safe as long as you can keep your nose clean for another 3 years.
