Tax disc placement on cars?

Can anybody tell me if you must have your tax disc showing on the front windscreen of your car or can you place it anywhere as long as its on view?(ie on the front sde quarter light).

Assuming that you mean on a vehicle with a full-width windscreen, it must be on or adjacent to the nearside of the windscreen. (Regulation 6 of the Road Vehicles (Registration and Licensing) Regulations 2002).

Did that always used to be so? I can remember, in the old days, when every car seemed to have quarter-light, that was a popular site for the licence. As it was usually perfectly flat, as opposed to the curved windscreen, it would stick better
Left bottom corner of front windscreen, nowhere else.
