Just got a letter this morning stating that I have been caught speeding at 88 mph in a 70 mph limit.

I have had my licence for 3 1/2 years now.

Any1 know the penalty associated with this kind of speeding?

Thanks in advance. Jennifer

As far as I'm aware, an '88/70' speeding offence simply results in the standard 60 fine + 3 points on your licence.

That's right - its a fine plus three points.

However Scots FLLIC - that's the easy bit. You now have to tell your insurance company and that's the painful part. Most companies will increase your premium by a horrific amount - and some will just drop you like a hot brick.
Your thre points will stay on your licence for five years. For insurance purposes they are ignored after three years so your premiums will come down then (provided you don't get more points). However, if you try to hire a vehicle within five years, or apply for a driving job, many firms won't touch you as they only want clean licences. You won't have that for five years, After that, send your licence off and it will come back with the three points removed.

That's the real penalty. I had nine points once and it was hell.
In my experience insurance companies don't care about a single sp30 ( minor speeding offence) and from what I've heard don't care about 2 but then start to really load you if like Andyvon you get 9 points.

In most cases that'll be 3 offences - maybe that makes them think you're a slow learner
From personal experience I can can tell you that 1 sp30 matters not. Depending on the company 2 or 3 can start to hike the premium.

you'll get a fixed penalty 60 + 3 points [edited by ABED]!
My dear Jennifer, I am shocked and disgusted by the fact that you drove at such a speed ! Have you no thought for the safety of other road users never mind your own ? You should be hung, drawn and quartered for this horrific offence and then banned for ten years.

You will get a 60.00 fine and three penaly points and it will not affect your insurance premium. Get a TALEX LITE best investment I ever made - it knows where all the 'safety' cameras are and will keep your licence points free. I got mine in COMET for 70.00 here's the link to the website -http://www.talex.co.uk/buyonline/default.asp

Alternatively save 70 and more by not speeding in the first place. Ta-Dah!
It's all very well to be 'holier than thou' 198 but modern vehicles are very lively and it can be very easy to creep over the speed limit. A unit such as the one I am recommending to Jennifer will remind her when she is over the prescribed limit and she can then reduce her velocity accordingly. I find it very comforting to be constantly reminded of the proximity of these revenue gatherers and to be made aware of my speed at critical times.

Don't worry about the 3 points, insurance companies ignore them now as most people have them. If my Dad (whos 68) can manage to get 6 points, then they realise that these points are not what they should be (an indication of a dangerous driver) but just an indication of an unlucky person hit by another task.

Before the left wingers say that speeding is dangerous, I agree it can be, but it is all down to circumstances and inappropriate speed for the conditions is the danger.

Personally I think that 88 in a 70 limit can be safe depending on the circumstances. Don't forget that cars are more capable stopping safely than in the days when the limits were set.

Oh BTW I don't have any points........yet
Hey, hey - OK everyone - maybe I'm wrong and I apologise.

I got nine points years ago (1 x speeding and 2 x defective tyres) I was nearly crucified. It was so bad that I made sure I didn't get any more so it's been years. I hope things have changed now and insurers do take a fairly decent approach.

Sorry if I got it wrong Jennifer!
Right back atcha Compostella...

Doing anything ever?!.... Doubt it.
As usual Chris gives a speedy and correct answer.

Then, as usual, we get all the nonsense about it being unfair to catch drivers speeding. I don't care if you perceive speed cameras as revenue gatherers - they are there and will catch you if you are speeding.

Perhaps the speed limits are too low but moaning on AB won't change them.

Then we get the statement about modern cars being able to stop more quickly. That's probably true but, unfortunately, they don't stop until the moron behind the wheel hits the brake pedal. As far as I am aware reaction times have not improved over the years.

Slap on the wrist for you Jennifer but, luckily, no other harm done.
