The other possibility (and my guess) is that you have a rubber drain plug in the floor beneath the driver, but it is now missing. The plug is about an inch or so in diameter and it is designed to be removed to drain water out of the floor pan. If it's missing though it will let water in when you are driving in the rain.

(Continued - sorry)
You can find out whether the floor plug is missing by lifting the carpet on the driver's side of the car (in the back too).If the floor plug is missing then you will see the ground through a large circular hole. Replacements are easy to get from the dealer or a scrapyard.
If a door or window rubber has perished or been damaged, then those are easy to replace too from the same.

You will have to take the carpet out as the wadding underneath will be soaked and will never dry out. Once the carpet is out it will be much easier to spot where the water is coming in. You will need to remove the front seats and some trim but well worth it. A wet car in the winter is a nightmare with steamy windows etc. Had same problem once and that was the final and only effective solution as even if you locate the leak and fix it the car will never dry out properly.
Sorry, but I find many of these answers and the question just unbelievable.
Use some common sense. For example, if the drivers floor pans is wet you will either find water coming from up above or it's coming from underneath. Get the idea? Now have a look.
By the way, the garage sounds like it just can't be bothered, ie they can'y find a way to charge you lots of money for parts that you don't need.
