Floppy indicator stalk!

The indicator stalk in my VW Beetle (new model) has recently become very floppy. It's working fine - it just feels very loose and does not click off properly. My local garage has tried to replace it, but they are unable to get to the necessary area. In order to replace the indiactor the steering wheel has to be taken off and the air bag disabled, but the mechanics couldn't get to the air bag - they hadn't got a long enough tool. (!) They have recommended I take it to the VW dealers, which I don't really want to do as I think it will be an expensive job!! Has anybody got any ideas or suggestions? Thanks :o)
