You can call the dvla if you have a valid reason and I guess this is a valid reason But why don't you just demand to see his licence?
Is there a copy of his licence in his records from when he started with the company? To be put on our firm's insurance, we have to show our driving licence.

That won't help if he has since gained any points / been disqualified since then, I suppose, so really the best courses of action are to either phone the DVLA or to ask to see his licence - and (if it is up to you) refuse to let him drive any company vehicles until he does - if he has been banned, but is still driving company vehicles, that could surely have serious implications for your company's insurance, and just imagine the problems if he had an accident and injured, or even killed someone.
the easiest way would be to up-date all your company drivers records and ask for new copys of they driving licence's. then he can't say he is being victermised in any way.
I agree with above post - ask all drivers for fresh copies of both parts f their driving licenses,- its a good idea to do this on a regular basis anyway
Suspend him from work until he produces his licence.

You could be guilty of an offence by continuing to let him drive while there are any doubts over the issue.
i see 2 ways for you here
1-phone dvla with him in the office, tell them your dillema and that you require confirmation that he/she has a valid d/l
(it may be best to get all relevant phone numbers and extension numbers 1st as dvla are a nightmare for the automated phone system) the dvla will play ball !

2- just ask the person, and if they cant produce. Just call the local police station, tell them the name, address and dob, and that this person will be driving a certain vehicle in a certain place, if that person is banned the police will persue the information.
Company I work for asks to see licence once a year insurance company requirment
