Speedo is erratic

Happened to my Astra.

Then it started getting noisy.

Then it stopped altogether.

Speedo cable had snapped.

If your speedo runs on a cable it is like the cable you used to have for the brakes on your pushbike, except that the inner part spins in the outer cover. If this is starting to fray it will cause the erratic speedo.
