i have just bought a car that is on the total loss register. there was a fire in the garage i bought the car from but the car was not damaged but they still put in on the register! ive been told all i have to do is book it in for a vic test. can someone please give me some advice on this. and it this true? the car is taxed and moted and in prefect condition engine ect and drives like a dream!

any car on the cat a,b,c total loss register,must have a vosa vic test,dvla,will then issue you a log book for the car.it takes about 30 mins and then you will be 100 % legal.

I don't think a VIC will help - this merely certifies that the vehicle has not been stolen.

As the car is MOT'd and taxed it has already had the VIC - the documents will not be issued without it.

Will the VIC confirm that the vehicle is roadworthy?
No. The VIC is designed to confirm the identity of the car and does not assess the quality of the repair.

I find it hard to believe a car that has never been damaged has been placed of the TLR - an insurance company is unwilling to pay out even where there is considerable damage.

As far as I know, it is impossible to remove the TL from the records. The fact is the insurance company has written it off for whatever reason, it is part of the vehicle history and will stay.

Ethel,what the hell are you on about,the car HAS to have a vic test,whether or not the car has a mot or tax,for it to be legally roadworthy it has to have the test. it does not just clarify the cars not stolen,if it was in a accident,its designed to make sure its been repaired properly and roadworthy,maybe not in this case,but it has to be tested,no matter what,i just wish people would comment on things they know about,instead of posting links and then making up things about the link.

thank you norman for your help. i was worried about not being able to drive it. i will book it in for the vic test so i will be given a new log book (v5)
