I bought a moped in november 06 and was told by the seller it was declared SORN and I haven't used it (apart from a little go when I got it) so haven't bothered to tax it yet. Recently checking on the internet though it says: Previous Tax Disc or SORN declaration expired on: 15.08.2006. Will I get a fine or anything for this as I think a vehicle must be taxed or declared SORN? What will be the penalty be as it only costs 15 a year to tax anyway? TIA

P.S I now want to tax and insure it, must I tax it first then insure it or doesn't it matter which I do first? THanks again.

Act quick my friend the fine is a standard 80.00 .Just write to your local licenceing office before they write to you.
Explain what has happened You will be ok then if you do that.

You have to insure your bike before you can tax it.

Thanks for the answers. Would the previous owner also be liable for a fine as the SORN declaration ran out whilst he was the registered keeper?

Thanks again.

it's the responsibility of the owner to sorn a vehicle if it is not to be taxed for a while ,so from august to november it would have been the sellers problem. it stays the sellers problem until it is registered in your name so from the date of purchase you would be responsible. you may end up with a fine for the 4 months it hasn't been sorn but if they say it had to be taxed from 16.08 2006 i think you could argue that you bought it in november and should only pay the road tax from then. i would do what ' thames' says and write to them first, then it looks better on you for enquiring. good luck
A friend of mine works for the DVLA. You are likely to get a Late Licensing Penalty (LLP). This is 80.00, but reduced to 40.00 if paid within a certain amt. of time.
It will not go in your favour for "enquiring" to a Local DVLA Office. The system does not work like that.
