Lying to the insurance company

I had an accident a few days ago. I stopped at traffic lights and the car behind hit mine. The other driver offered me money not to go through the insurance but he also injured me (and his offer was never going to be enough to pay for the repairs of my car). He has now made up a story about me REVERSING into him.

What are the consequences of him lying to his insurance company if he gets found out?

His insurance company must know he is lying (since he initially said that he was going to settle the bill and then changed his mind), are they legally allowed to support his false version?
